Scope of Work: Clogged Toilet Repair

A worked example of the guidance above, applied to a common request. Use it as a model when you submit your own.

Work order details

Describe the issue: won't flush at all, drains slowly, water rising near the rim, prior attempts to clear it, etc.

Scope of work requested

–  Diagnose the cause of the clog (foreign object, waste buildup, or a blockage further down the line in the branch drain or main sewer).

–  Clear the clog using the appropriate method — plunger, toilet auger/snake, or hydro-jetting if the blockage is beyond the trap.

–  If the clog isn't isolated to the fixture, inspect the drain line and identify whether the issue extends to shared plumbing.

–  Test the toilet after clearing to confirm proper flush and drainage, and check for leaks at the base and tank.

–  Remove any retrieved debris and leave the work area clean.

–  Provide a brief summary of the cause and any recommendations to prevent recurrence (non-flushable items, aging pipe, low-flow fixture issues).

Toilet-specific checks before submitting

In addition to the general checklist in the Work Order Best Practices article, confirm these were tried for this specific issue:

☐  Attempted to clear it with a plunger (a flange plunger works better on toilets than a standard cup plunger).

☐  Let the bowl sit for 15–20 minutes if it was overfilled, rather than flushing again immediately, to avoid an overflow.

☐  Checked whether other drains in the unit (sinks, showers) are also backing up — if so, this may be a main line issue that changes the urgency and scope.

☐  Located the water shut-off valve behind or near the toilet and closed it if there was any risk of overflow.

☐  Confirmed nothing unusual was flushed (wipes, hygiene products, paper towels, a toy or object) that a plunger clearly can't handle.

☐  Ruled out a low-flow or older toilet model as a chronic/recurring issue, if this isn't the first time this fixture has clogged.
